Title: Finding Oneself
|
Exhibition I wanted to create three canvases that were completely different from one another. I wanted one that showed the city to be washed out, and sort of out of focus, and wanted the other two canvases to stand out. I intentionally made the larger piece simple, to represent me as the artist trying to find myself within the city.
I feel like I accomplished what I was trying to do well, even though there could be improvements in some places. Overall, I am happy with the outcome that I have created. |
Inspiration I chose to use The Long Leg by Edward Hopper as my inspiration for my city piece. I wanted one of my pieces, the city, to be different than the other two.
When I saw his work I knew that this cityscape of a lake and a lighthouse on a beach was the same direction that I wanted my piece to go in. I wanted to make it washed out, to represent that the city is sort of out of focus, and is waiting to be discovered and find more things about it. I also took inspiration for all of my pieces from this cityscape poster that I came across while researching different techniques. I wanted to focus on the Pop Art movement for two of my canvases, and I feel like it shows what I was going for well. It also inspired me to create my cityscape the way that I did. Another part of inspiration that I took from for my pieces were the various colors that you see throughout Milwaukee. There are areas where there are many bright colors, and areas where you have the calming and soothing environment. The things that are found around me are really something that I take inspiration from, not only from this piece, but also for the various works that I have previously created. |
Planning/Sketches First Slide: This shows the different types of set ups that I was experimenting with. I ended up not using any of these, but I came up with my final set up through moving around the canvases in sketch #1,, slightly different.
Second Slide: This shows the first initial plan that I had come up with all of my sketches. Soon after looking after the idea and beginning to create it, I realized that they were too similar and something needed to be changed. Third slide: This is the final idea that I had come up with for my larger canvas. I decided to stick with a cityscape, but use footsteps to represent me walking through the surrounding city, trying to find my own path. |
Process First-Fifth Slide: Shows the process of making the Artist canvas. It shows after I put the skin tone base coat down, and drawing the eyes themselves onto the canvas. I then wanted to show a close up of the first eye that I completed fully. The Fifth slide then shows the canvas when it is completed with both eyes and nose added, done.
Sixth- Tenth Slide: These slides show the process of me making my main canvas piece. I wanted to stick with bold and dark colors to represent a city that seems dark to me, and I used footsteps for the finishing touch in the street fading away, to represent me trying to find myself in a city, that I feel as if I don't belong. Eleventh-Thirteenth Slides: These slides show how my city canvas coming to being. I started with the sky and worked my way down the canvas. I used washed out colors because I wanted this canvas to be more mild, and not as extreme as the others. |
