Title: Dining With Humanity
|
Exhibition I used a regular place setting to represent the meals we each have everyday, and used the sawdust to represent deforestation, and how it takes away from the food supply within non industrialized areas. I used the plastic hands instead of a dinner plate to represent dehumanization of the people.
Surrealism influenced my piece because of how interesting everything is within that movement. How you have to look and think twice about what you have just seen. That's what I intended my piece to be, but to have a connection to the real world and the society we are living in. |

This slideshow shows nine of the pictures that I took while experimenting with my final project. The rest came out to be either blurry, or I just didn't like them. I first experimented with using the normal table as a setting for my piece with a black background, but then discovered that an all black display is what really made my piece stand out.
Inspiration/Research I took inspiration from the piece named Luncheon in Fur by Meret Oppenheim. But why did I choose to do something around these lines? I wanted to accomplish something that is different and may not make sense when you first glance at it.
This is when I came to the movement of Surrealism, because I knew it would be perfect for the kind of look I wanted to accomplish. I researched the movement itself, and all of the kinds of sculptures that had been made by previous artists. I learned that surrealism is meant for imagination. It's not supposed to be something obvious, or something that doesn't make the viewer of the artwork need to think a bit. The one that stood out to me the most was this fur lined teacup. It stood out to me because it is something that is so unusual, but at the same time, you couldn't really take your eye off of it. After seeing this piece I knew that I wanted to do something along these lines. I wanted people to look at my work and question the many possibilities that it could mean. I wanted to take my imagination to a whole new level, and create something that I wouldn't have even expected. Sourceshttp://www.theartstory.org/movement-surrealism.htm

Planning Sketches First Slide: This is the first idea that I had for my piece. I came up with the idea of hammers and nails by looking through my garage, and finding anything that I could use. I came up with this concept and really liked it, but as I continued to explore with what I had, I decided not to go through with it.
Second Slide: I wanted to bring such an everyday thing, and create it into something that is totally different. However, I decided soon that this was not what I wanted to do for my piece. Third Slide: I came up with the idea of representing my childhood from old things I had in my house I am moving out of. I wanted to represent my childhood years, and how I have grown to now. However, the materials I had were not really working well, and I decided not to go along with it. Fourth Slide: While going through my garage I had found a package of galvanized wire, and figured I could make something out of it. With this I came up with the idea of creating a sphere like object, and putting nails around the outer shell, but having something as delicate like a flower, contained on the inside. Fifth Slide: This is finally what I decided to do for my final piece. After seeing all of my ideas, I wasn't really confident in doing any of them until I came across this one. I came up with this idea by looking at the Surrealist movement, and thinking of something unique and different that I could put together. I didn't want to do something that was practical, and knew that this was the right thing for me. However, I did end up changing the idea of the dinner plate last minute, to emphasize a greater meaning. |
Process First Slide: This shows the silverware that I used for the main aspect of my piece. (Forgot to include the plastic hands and wine glass, was sort of a last minute finishing touch).
Second Slide: This shows an example of what the silverware had looked like after glue was added to it. I added the glue by brushing it on with an old paint brush. Third-Fifth Slide: These slides show different angles of the finished/drying pieces to my work. These were photographed after all had been glued and covered with the saw dust. Struggles While creating this project, I encountered a lot of struggles and difficulty. One of those things was the aspect of actually deciding what I wanted to do for my final piece. I had come up with a bunch of ideas, but every time I would start one, I would end up changing my mind. I either didn't like the way it was turning out, or I had gotten completely uninterested in the idea itself.
The main difficulty that I found while making this piece, was to make sure that there was not too much glue on each of the silverware pieces, and the glassware as well. If too much was put on, then it created a large clump. and the sawdust became to be a big sticky mess. So because of this, there were times where I had to remove some glue along with sawdust, and remove it completely and start over. However, in the end I am really happy with what my piece had come out to be. |
