Title: Holder of Life
|
Exhibition For this specific art piece, I wanted to create something that is important to the way of life, and how without it, we are nothing. I chose to use lungs instead of the heart to represent the fact that lungs hold oxygen. Oxygen is literally all we need to live, and without it, we die. The lungs are a sacred thing, that holds a lot power to life itself. I took inspiration from them specifically for the reason being that they contain a simple substance, and if that was to disappear, so would we.

Inspiration After I finally became set on a sketch for my project, I was searching for something that is alike with the idea that I had in my head. While researching lung sculptures, aside from ones used for medical purposes, I came across this photo. After further research I discovered that this was made entirely out of sand. That alone seemed to really fascinate me, and led me to want to create a similar structure out of clay.
The way that it is formed inspired me the most because it is so unique. To create this piece of work, must have taken forever, and I was fascinated by how much detail was actually able to be seen from it. After seeing this, I wanted to create something like it, but with my own little twist. I also took inspiration from the fact that I myself am fascinated by the human body, and what makes us the beings that we are. I enjoy learning about what is on the inside, and how without it, we are nothing, Without lungs, we cannot breathe, and without breathing, we cannot live. It's like they are the main backbone to our whole lives, just besides the heart. |
Planning/Sketches First Slide: I came up with the idea of the female body, as basic as it sounds, but wanted to create it the way that I feel as a woman myself, it should be created. However, it didn't exactly turn out the way I had wanted it to, so i completely scratched the idea.
Second Slide: This shows the last initial plan that I had for my piece. I was going to go for the lungs, because they are such an important part of our being.I wanted to take something important as the lungs, and show the importance through my own taste. Third Slide: This slide shows the sketch that I made of the human heart. I was going to use this for my final piece, but then thought that this was too general of an idea. I wanted to do something that yes, is something general, but something that I could put a bit more meaning to. |
Process First Slide: This slide shows the materials that I used to create my piece.
Second Slide: This slide shows the shape of the lung that I drew onto the clay after flattening it. I did this to have a guideline, so I would grasp the shape of the lungs correctly. Third Slide: This shows the two lungs after they have each been cut out of the clay and smoothed over, so no rough surfaces were left. Fourth Slide: This shows the trachea being outlined onto the clay, so I have the correct shape and form proportioned to the two lungs I have made. Fifth Slide: This just shows all of the pieces that I had made after each of them were smoothed over, and details were added to the lungs themselves, such as the veins. Sixth Slide: This shows a photo of a lung after experimenting with copper paint. I wanted to use copper to create a realistic look and texture. Seventh Slide: This shows the three pieces after each have been painted. I feel as if this part went very well, as the paint was applied nice and even. |
