I chose the movement of German Expressionism for this piece. I wanted my art to show a realistic everyday thing but with the twist of the German Expressionism technique. I also chose this movement because I feel like it is the movement that greatly relates to the kind of piece I wanted to create. While making this plans for this piece, I came across the work named Woodcuts. I saw the artwork and immediately got inspired by the artist, Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, and his techniques.

Inspiration My inspiration for my art piece was the movement of German Expressionism, and the artist to go along with it is Karl Schmidt-Rottluff. The piece I chose by him is called Woodcuts. I chose this piece of art because the detail and certain technique he used for his trees seem to bring them more to life, and give them some character. And that's something that I want to recreate for my blockprint. Also, German Expressionism is a movement that I enjoy. I like looking at the different sorts of art pieces created by the artists, and seeing them express themselves in each piece of art work they created.

Planning & Process (Before Inking) First Slide: This was my original idea, and first sketch that I came up with. However, I decided I didn't like this one enough.
Second Slide: This slide is showing my drawing of my second planning piece. I used the idea of a tree and a swing from my original, but decided to add more detail and make it look more realistic and fit the block print. Third Slide: Here is when I transferred my sketch to graph paper by tracing. I then cut the graph paper to the size of the block print, so I could easily transfer it to be carved. Fourth Slide: I transferred my piece backwards so when I make the print, it will come out facing the correct way. Fifth Slide: (Same idea as previous slide), all I changed was cleaned up the blacked out areas so my lines are clear enough so I can carve correctly. Sixth Slide: This slide shows my piece after I finished carving everything. |
Attempts & Struggles First Slide: This slide shows my first attempt after inking my artwork. As you can see, the ink didn't transfer too well.
Second Slide: This slide shows my second attempt after inking my piece. I think that this one turned out to be a lot better, but there was still a few areas with flaws. Third Slide: This slide shows my last attempt before getting my piece the correct way I want it. I think that this one turned out very well, and is very clear to see. This one was a big contender for my final showcase, but there are a few spots missing ink yet. Struggles While creating this specific art piece, I ran into a few struggles. The first one was that my first carving that I did, wasn't deep enough so the ink got everywhere, and covered the lines I wanted to stay white. So I had to go back into the piece and re-carve almost everything just so that it would turn out correctly.
During the actual inking process itself, there was also a few issues. There would be times when there wasn't enough ink on the block print, so not everything would show up when you transfer it. However, I did end up learning from my mistakes, and ended up getting it completed correctly on my fourth try. |
